The Hollywood Reporter Asked 7 White Guys To Talk About Diversity In Animation
Huffington Post - about 1 year
The Hollywood Reporter brings together A-listers and industry veterans for thought-provoking conversations around awards season every year to give all of us watching at home a seat at the proverbial roundtable. But for some reason, the media outlet thought the best candidates to engage in a much-needed discussion about diversity in animation were seven white guys, drawing ire across social media for the complete and total absence of diversity.  Byron Howard, Garth Jennings, Travis Knight, Mike Mitchell, John Musker, and Mark Osborne and Seth Rogen, who are responsible for such films like “Zootopia,” “Moana,” and “Sing,” sat down earlier this week to talk “avoiding ethnic stereotypes” and trying to “break the mold” of princesses.  The conversation was essentially facepalm central given the many worthy non-white and female animators working in the industry today who were not included. Even when acknowledging the importance of accurately repre...

Misha Hyman: A Diamond in the Rough: The Rise of Kelly Olynyk
Huffington Post Sports - almost 5 years
Kelly Olynyk is the shining example of how patience truly is a virtue. After coming to Gonzaga as a freshmen in 2009, Olynyk had aspirations of becoming one of the best players in college basketball and to eventually lead the Bull Dogs to a national championship. After two seasons with Gonzaga, he was not able to earn consistent playing time on the court and averaged an unassuming 4.8 points per game and 3.25 rebounds in only 12.9 minutes. No one saw the potential that laid within his 7'0", 238 pound Canadian frame, besides Olynyk himself. Olynyk made the conscious and mature decision to redshirt in the 2011-2012 season, in the hopes of mitigating his weaknesses and enhancing his strengths in an attempt to lead Gonzaga to a national title. With a full year away from the game, Olynyk was poised to blossom. Olynyk was paired with Gonzaga's strength and conditioning coach, Travis Knight, and Knight saw the vast potential which Olynyk possessed. Knight noted earlie...

Updated 01:44 p.m., Friday, July 13, 2012 With a voice cast that includes Kodi Smit-McPhee, Anna Kendrick and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, "ParaNorman" comes from the makers of the 2009 animated adventure "Coraline." Butler, fellow director Sam Fell and producer Travis Knight said they were aiming to mix a lot of styles, among them the coming-of-age tales of "Breakfast Club" filmmaker Hughes, the wild 1980s youth adventures of Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment and the zombie horror of "Night of the Living Dead" creator George Romero. The filmmakers showed off a handful of scenes of the 3-D comedy, including one of Smit-McPhee's Norman in a graveyard surrounded by growling but goofy zombies rising from their graves.
