Ever since the inception of Spokeo\u2019s Famous People Birthday\u2019s Page<\/a>, we’ve wanted\u00a0to have the most inclusive birthday page when considering who to showcase.\u00a0Every day we\u00a0feature 18 people (9 contemporary, 9 historical) and I\u00a0wanted to highlight\u00a0just a few of the fascinating people I learned about through this intensive people search process. Specifically, we’re spotlighting some of the men and women born this month who (in my opinion) are underrated; some of them contributed great things to society, some of them were a lot more strange. Let\u2019s take a look at some of famous\u00a0figures celebrating August birthdays who you may not know:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"James<\/a>

James Baldwin<\/p><\/div>\n

August 2<\/a><\/strong>: \u00a0Two great individuals\u00a0to look up:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0James Baldwin<\/a> – a Left Bank writer who wrote \u201cGo Tell it on the Mountain,\u201d an American classic that dealt with the roles of religion and sexuality within the black community.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Frederic Auguste Bartholdi<\/a>,\u00a0a French architect of note. You might not have heard of his name, but you would recognize\u00a0his most famous piece: the Statue of Liberty.<\/p>\n

\"KatherineLeeBates\"<\/a>

Katherine Lee Bates<\/p><\/div>\n

August 12<\/a><\/strong>: Born in 1859, Katherine Lee Bates<\/a> was a writer and teacher who wrote the lyrics for \u201cAmerica the Beautiful\u201d and popularized the character of Mrs. Claus.<\/p>\n

August 7:<\/a><\/strong> One of the more unusual characters in history, the Countess Elizabeth Bathory<\/a>\u00a0was born on this day. \u00a0The reason for her notoriety? \u00a0She was one of the most prolific serial killers who was a woman. \u00a0Her evil exploits garnered a reputation close to that of Vlad the Impaler.<\/p>\n

August 18<\/strong>:<\/a><\/p>\n

This was one of the most interesting dates in August we came across. \u00a0We could talk about everyone born on this date, but let\u2019s point out three in particular.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0Lydia Lityvak<\/a> was a female Soviet fighter pilot during World War II. She was the first woman to win the title of ace.<\/p>\n

\"HenriettaLacks\"<\/a>

Henrietta Lacks<\/p><\/div>\n

2. Another amazing woman born on this day\u00a0was Henrietta Lacks<\/a>.\u00a0Her cells were used to develop the polio vaccine. \u00a0Her cells are still being used for research in cancer, aids, and gene mapping because of their unique quality. \u00a0I highly recommend further reading with The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks<\/i> by Rebecca Skloot.<\/p>\n

3.Finally, a man born today who has been portrayed as being terrified of being forgotten – a contemporary of Mozart\u2019s – Antonio Salieri<\/a>. Their rivalry is fictionalized in Milos Forman\u2019s brilliant film Amadeus<\/i> as a composer who recognized and envied the mammoth shadow cast by Mozart.<\/p>\n

\"AltheaGibson\"<\/a>

Althea Gibson<\/p><\/div>\n

August 25<\/a><\/strong>: This day has two great names on two different sides of history. On one hand, you have the great Althea Gibson<\/a> who broke the color barrier in international tennis – winning the French Open, Wimbeldon, and the U.S. National (which would become the U.S. Open). \u00a0All tennis (and sports fan) should remember her skill and contribution to the sport. Ironically, she shares her birthday with someone on the wrong side of history – Governor George Wallace<\/a> – who stoked racial tensions and proclaimed the infamous words: \u201csegregation now, segregation tomorrow, and segregation forever.\u201d Another notable person born this\u00a0was the founder of the detective agency,\u00a0Allan Pinkerton<\/a>. His agents did everything from guard Abraham Lincoln, to track down Jesse James.<\/p>\n

August 27<\/a>:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Ed Gein<\/a>,\u00a0the inspiration for Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Silence of the Lambs, was born in August. \u00a0The history of American serial killers begins with\u00a0Gein\u2019s terrifying legacy.<\/p>\n

\"JackKirby\"<\/a>

Jack Kirby<\/p><\/div>\n

August 28<\/a>:<\/strong> Jack \u201cthe King\u201d Kirby<\/a>, who was born on this day, helped define The Hulk, The X-Men, and the Fantastic Four with Marvel Comics and also created some of DC\u2019s legendary characters like THE NEW GODS! \u00a0His life also served as inspirations for plot points in the wonderful novel “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.”<\/p>\n

August 29<\/a>: \u00a0<\/strong>On this day, Otis Boykin<\/a> the great African-American inventor was born. \u00a0He created resistors for use in computers and missiles, however, his greatest invention was the pacemaker.<\/p>\n

August 31<\/a>:<\/strong> Two prominent African-Americans were born on this day – Kenny Washington<\/a> was the first black man to sign an NFL contract for the Los Angeles Rams. \u00a0He led an amazing life, also fighting the Nazis in World War II and being one of the soldiers to liberate Auschwitz. \u00a0Donyale Luna<\/a> was the first African-American model to be featured on a high fashion magazine – Vogue. \u00a0She was also a model and actress for Andy Warhol\u2019s factory.<\/p>\n

Amrita Pritam<\/a> was also born on this date in 1919; an important figure in Punjabi literature, she wrote beautifully about the partition of India.<\/p>\n
