office (because it\u2019s all too easy for scammers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spokeo.com\/compass\/tracing-spoofed-phone-number\/\">\u201cspoof\u201d a legitimate number<\/a> and fool your Caller ID).\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The caller may claim to be a marshal, or a police officer, or an officer of your local court.\u00a0 That part varies, but the message is the same: you\u2019ve blown off a summons to jury duty, and now you\u2019ve got to pay a hefty fine or face jail time.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you protest that you don\u2019t remember seeing this fake jury duty summons (because it\u2019s purely fictional, and they don\u2019t know or care if you\u2019ve ever gotten one), the caller will grudgingly allow that it might be a case of mistaken identity.\u00a0 They may then ask you to provide your SSN or other personal information to verify whether their records are correct.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With or without that digression, the caller will insist that there\u2019s a bench warrant for your arrest and that it\u2019s imperative you pay a fine <em>immediately<\/em> in order to avoid serving time.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The caller walks you through payment by way of prepaid debit, or gift cards, or wire transfer \u2014\u00a0all methods that are difficult to trace or reverse once they\u2019re sent, and a hallmark of scam activity.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all scammers approach things the same way.&nbsp; Some are very much the heavy-handed bully, while others play the role of a sympathetic administrator helping you navigate a hostile system that\u2019s somehow mistakenly put you in a bad position.&nbsp; Well\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Real summonses come by first-class mail, meaning a phone call won\u2019t be the first you hear of it.\u00a0 Sure, mail can occasionally go astray, but it\u2019s not common.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Courts typically close at the end of the business day, but a clerk is calling you at home at night?\u00a0 Really?\u00a0 Or a marshal is calling to tell you they\u2019re going to arrest you, instead of just showing up at your door?\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t happen.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you miss a legitimate jury duty summons, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ndga\/pr\/federal-court-and-us-attorney-s-office-warn-citizens-about-ongoing-jury-scams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">federal courts<\/a> and most other jurisdictions will send you a followup letter with a summons to appear before the judge and explain yourself.\u00a0 You\u2019ll always be given an opportunity to defer jury duty or withdraw entirely, if you have a legitimate reason.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you do miss a legitimate juror summons, or if you simply blow off jury duty, the worst that happens is what\u2019s called a \u201cbench\u201d warrant.\u00a0 Nobody\u2019s actively looking for you, but if you happen to be pulled over or otherwise have an encounter with the legal\/court system, it will show up when they check your name.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The supposed \u201cfine\u201d is ridiculously high, often several hundred or even thousands of dollars.\u00a0 That\u2019s much, much higher than the real-world fines for this offense.\u00a0 For example, in North Carolina \u2014 which has been hit hard by this scam over the years \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nccourts.gov\/help-topics\/jury-service\/jury-service-scams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the real fine is just $50<\/a> (at the time of writing).\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demanding payment (or personal information) over the phone is something real officers of the court simply don\u2019t do.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Similarly, demanding payment in the form of gift cards, prepaid cards, or wire transfers is an absolute show-stopping red flag.\u00a0 Real courts will never do this.\u00a0 If you ever need to pay a fine at the court, most will cheerfully take cash, credit card, or any other conventional payment method.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why jury duty scammers never give you a moment to stop and think about what you\u2019re hearing.&nbsp; If they did, their whole house of cards would fall apart.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"whattodo\">What to Do About a Jury Duty Scam Call<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If a jury duty scam call comes your way, the simplest and best thing to do is hang up immediately and make a note of the number the call came from.\u00a0 Next, search for it using Spokeo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spokeo.com\/reverse-phone-lookup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reverse Phone Lookup<\/a>.\u00a0 If it\u2019s not the number of a local court or US Marshal\u2019s office, then you\u2019ve probably caught a scammer.<br><br>What if the scammers spoofed a legitimate number, or if the call simply showed as a \u201cprivate\u201d or \u201crestricted\u201d number?\u00a0 Well, the Spokeo search result for a legitimate number also has a box labeled \u201cPhone Reputation Score.\u201d\u00a0 One of the things you\u2019ll see in that box is whether there have been complaints about that number.\u00a0 If there are complaints for a legitimate number, that\u2019s often a sign it\u2019s been spoofed by scammers.\u00a0 In the case of a private number there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spokeo.com\/compass\/what-is-a-restricted-call\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">several ways to unmask it<\/a> and hunt it down through Spokeo (and ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spokeo.com\/compass\/find-out-who-called-you-without-caller-id\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">do the same<\/a> if you live in one of the few areas where your phone carrier doesn\u2019t offer Caller ID).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there\u2019s any doubt in your mind about the legitimacy of the call, look up the local court or marshal\u2019s office the next day and reach out to them for confirmation.\u00a0 If you really <em>did<\/em> miss a summons, you can make things right on your own terms .
