In the collections industry, one of the core KPIs is right-party contacts (RPC): the percentage of an agency\u2019s communication attempts that actually reach the correct debtor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s an important measurement for a couple of reasons. One is that the collections process simply can\u2019t begin until communications are established with the debtor. Another is that the time, energy, and resources spent on locating hard-to-find debtors (skip tracing) add cost, increase the time needed to generate a recovery, and reduce your agency\u2019s ROI. Anything you can do to speed up the skip-tracing process and improve right-party contacts will have a positive effect on profitability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we share a few of our favorite tips to do just that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Examine Your Workflow for Baked-In Inefficiencies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s always useful to start with the metaphorical low-hanging fruit. And, usually, these are the things that are entirely within your own control. Your workflow is an obvious example.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your front-line staff can often tell you which parts of the process are the most time-consuming or frustrating if you\u2019ll ask (and more importantly, listen). Trade publications and industry get-togethers, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spokeo.com\/pathfinder\/key-trends-and-takeaways-from-rmai-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the annual RMAi conference<\/a> in Las Vegas, also provide great opportunities to learn how peers in the industry approach their own processes and address inefficiencies.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases, it can be as simple as changing your chosen communications method. For example, physical demand letters sent through the mail are inherently time-consuming and relatively costly. Look Beyond Mail and Phone Calls<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>That brings us to a second point: It may be time to think very seriously about upgrading your communications strategy, if you aren\u2019t already doing so. TransUnion\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transunion.com\/content\/dam\/transunion\/global\/business\/collateral\/report\/DM_3PC_2023_Datos_Aite_Report.pdf?utm_campaign=TU.com%20Autoresponder%20Thank%20You&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=Eloqua&amp;elqTrackId=C482BDC2EFF5EA7C05A2B4AF30F7A3A0&amp;elqak=8AF50CFCAA1002AD239636F2783AE8B9EFA777D732C0A5BDBE2F947A3D025CE9A8BC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 Debt Collection Industry Report<\/a> showed that 87% and 86% of agencies still utilized physical mail and phone calls, respectively, making them the most widely used methods of contacting debtors.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, both have serious limitations. In the case of phone calls, you may require several attempts before you successfully reach the debtor (if at all), and those attempts are limited under Regulation F. With physical letters, the time physical mail spends in transit (and the lack of feedback, if the debtor has in fact moved), makes them notably inefficient. Shifting to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spokeo.com\/pathfinder\/digital-debt-collection-as-a-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a digital-first collections strategy<\/a>, in this context, makes perfect sense as a time-saver.
