History of St. Patrick’s Day

Are you wearing green and drinking green beer today in celebration of this spirited holiday? Have you ever wondered why?? Spokeo to the rescue with a bit of history for you. The festivities first began as the celebration of the arrival of Christianity to Ireland, and March 17 is the anniversary of the death of the most commonly recognized patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick.

How did wearing green and shamrocks come about? It is said that Saint Patrick used the three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish. All around the world, the day includes parties and parades and usually  the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Apparently, in 19th Century America, churches made Lenten exceptions so that all could commemorate in the day’s festivities which included alcoholic libations. #winning
