2016 was an exciting year for Spokeo! We celebrated a major win on behalf of businesses in America, released a variety of updates to our products, and continued to focus on our work with non-profits and community partners.
A Year of Company Progress
We celebrated our 10th anniversary! – April, 2016 marked Spokeo’s tenth anniversary. Spokeo has grown from four founders in a basement in the Bay Area, to more than 200 employees in the wonderful city of Pasadena. Now serving 18 million unique visitors per month, we help our customers access the critical information about people that they need to feel safe, make smart decisions and build important relationships.

Helpful Spokeo Search Feature Updates – Spokeo continued its product innovations throughout 2016. This year, we launched new features to meet our customers’ needs, including advanced search filters, property owners & residents, and expanded address maps,

Historic Supreme Court Case – the Supreme Court of the United States sided with Spokeo in Spokeo, Inc. v. Robins on the issue of whether the Constitution permits a lawsuit to proceed merely on the allegation that federal law has been violated when the plaintiff cannot claim that he has been harmed in a concrete way. The case has now set the precedent and led to dismissal of other class action lawsuits, such as the Nockchan v. Lyft case and has served as an important protection for many business innovations that benefit consumers.
A Year of Community Involvement
Innovate Pasadena – for the third year in a row, we worked closely with Innovate Pasadena, a vibrant ecosystem celebrating and promoting technology and design innovation in the greater Pasadena area. One of our key roles was a sponsor of Connect Week, where Spokeo and Rails Girls LA hosted a workshop teaching women to code.
Marshall Fundamental School – We proudly partnered with Rentreporters.com to host an “Introduction to Computer Programming” class for middle school students at Marshal Fundamental School for the second semester in a row. Our developers loved spending time with kids and helping ignite their passion for technology. We look forward to continuing this program for future students.
Community Grants – Through SpokeoPro, Spokeo offers non-profits a tailored approach to conducting donor research that helps non-profits with fundraising efforts. Spokeo also provides select non-profits free accounts to help support their work through our Community Grants program. Amongst a variety of grant recipients, we were proud to support Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) to help reconnect foster children to family members and shared a great story about their work!
Scholarship Program – Mark Hewertson of Wescosville, PA was awarded the Spring 2016 Spokeo Connections scholarship for his insightful essay about the innovative Nikola Tesla. The scholarship will help fund his education at Penn State University. We awarded the Fall 2016 Spokeo Connections scholarship to Shashank Keshav Rao of Canton, MI. His brilliant essay was chosen out of 300 and examined how social media tools serve the greater public good.
