How Our Opt-Out System Works

Some people have been reporting to us that their opted-out listings have reappeared on Spokeo.com. After investigating these cases, we’ve found that this has been caused by certain misunderstandings and false expectations about how Spokeo works. We would like to address this issue and clarify any confusion.

When you choose to opt out of Spokeo, we place a permanent flag on your listing so that it does not ever reappear on Spokeo.com. We are constantly receiving new and updated listings, and we try very hard to match these new listings to the existing ones and preserve your privacy preference. However, a computer cannot know the difference between "John Smith at 1234 Nowhere Street" and "John Smith at 5678 Somewhere Avenue", though you may know that you moved. So if a new listing contains your new address, or if there are significant typos which prevent our computers from matching an existing listing, you will see a new listing for your name. We are constantly improving our matching algorithms in order to maintain your privacy. Spokeo guarantees that our opt out policy is among the best on the Internet.

I can see how Spokeo can be a good service for some and; even though, the information gathered comes from public sources my dispute would be that this site makes it easy for anyone with bad intentions to find an individual. At the very least it takes effort to drive to the DMV or courthouse to dig out dirt on somebody or find out where they live. This site, while it can be good, it can also hurt people. I am not pleased that my mortgage pmt amount was published on here. I understand Spokeo’s argument but not all public info is easy to get. This website has changed that. In a way, it does feel like a violation of privacy. Just because it’s public doesn’t mean I want it advertised.

I will email the email address you mention but I think this site is absolutely horrible. Just because it is legal to aggregate and publish everyone’s personal information doesn’t mean it’s moral. Great example of a company doing something for money without regard for who it hurts.

i am reading Vanessa’s canned replies to everyone wanting their private info removed from spokeo. The “spokeo respects your privacy” is completely laughable. The entire premise of the website is an invasion of privacy. Putting up info on home value, income, ethnicity, photos?? A nice easy service for any stalkers out there or others looking to steal IDs. If someone wants to post that info about themselves on e.g. Linked In and let others view it that is their prerogative but Spokeo’s business model is just creepy.
