September is full of interesting holidays. Think our recent Programmer’s Day, and yesterday’s National Cheeseburger Day. Today, we celebrate “International Talk Like a Pirate Day.” Given the big iOS7 update yesterday and tomorrow’s public release of the iPhone 5s, we figured we ask Siri to share her favorite pirates.

She came back with the following:

Wow Siri!  Didn’t know it was such a big secret. So alas, I bring you matey’s me favorite pirates of all time. Arggh!

Johnny Depp

1. Johnny Depp – Okay, so JD isn’t really a “Pirate” but he’s known as the great Jack Sparrow. With five blockbusters in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise and even a Disneyland ride featuring his character, he’s inarguably the most well-known pirate today.

Sean Parker

2. Sean Parker – He’s better known as a tech entrepreneur, but his co-founding of Napster with Sean Fanning, known for online PIRACY, qualifies him as a modern digital “pirate” in our books.

Carey

3. Cary Elwes – Yes, every mid-twenties and thirties female today, remembers watching “The Princess Bride” and falling in love with Westley – a farm boy turned PIRATE (Dread Pirate Roberts) who’ll overcome everything, even poison, and come back from the dead for “true love.” AAAAAAsssss you wishhhhh!

Dustin Hoffman

4. Dustin Hoffman – “Rain Man? How is he a pirate?” You might ask. Well, all kids from the eighties remember “HOOK,” and yes (had to look it up for myself) Captain Hook himself was played by the one and only Dustin Hoffman. Bangarang!! Oooh, remember Rufio?

John Matuszak

5. John Matuszak – So this one is a stretch, but continuing with our favorite eighties movies theme, in “The Goonies,” Mikey (Sean Astin), Brand (Josh Brolin), Mouth (Corey Feldman), Chunk (Jeff Cohen) and others venture on a long journey in search of pirate One-Eyed Willie’s hidden treasure. They’re chased by a family of mobsters including initially scary-looking, but later lovable, Sloth (John Matuszak) who ends up embracing pirate culture and saving them on Willie’s ship. “Hey You Guuuuuuys!” Here’s a recap of the scene if you’re not cool enough to have watched it as a kid.

There ya have it mateys. Apparently the coolest and memorable pirates came mostly from the eighties. Who are you favorite pirates? Tell us in the comments.
