Ruby or HTML? HAML! It combines the elegance of programming in Ruby with the HTML structure needed to build a website.
Career Aspirations: I’d like to continue to pursue a career in front end web development, possibly focusing on UI.
What did you work on this summer? I worked on updating the Spokeo Blog UI and setting up an automated deployment for it. Emily and I also built a “cache warmer” to make Spokeo faster when a new release is deployed. The last part of my internship was working on a fun project that would find a person’s closest celebrity lookalike!
Best Spokeo Moment? When Austin (our mentor) showed us his Costco membership photo. Austin: “When I was getting my photo taken, I asked the guy if I could throw up some gang signs, and he was like, yeah dude go for it!” The culture at Spokeo was one of my favorite parts about this internship, and this is just one example of how fun the people you get to work with are.
Do you have any advice for next year’s interns? Talk to your coworkers! Every conversation I’ve had with the people at Spokeo has been fun and enlightening. Everyone has a cool story to tell and valuable lessons to share. In addition, write detailed documentation as you work on your projects because it helps you stay organized, is extremely helpful for interns who may look at your code next year, and it’s a great way to keep track of what you did during the summer.
