Title: Senior Software Architect; (Was this your original title at Spokeo?) (No, I started as Software Developer, I’ve had 3 promotions since)

Tell us about your job. What do you do?

As a Software Architect, it is my job to maintain a codebase at a high level. I am responsible for deciding how the different systems in a project work together. I am responsible for designing how the data is accessed or represented in the code. And most importantly, I am responsible for making sure the developers on the team are writing code that is high quality and similar in style. It’s kind of like being the ‘Art Director’ of the codebase.

Life before Spokeo:

Before Spokeo I worked at a bunch of small startups, and then Yellowpages.com for a few years. I’m so glad I joined Spokeo, no one at my old companies played Magic: The Gathering.

Most interesting Spokeo Project:

Spokeo Connections was an amazing challenge. It seems like a small project, but there was so much back end programming to do on it, and I worked with a really excellent team. [News on this project coming to you soon!]

Favorite Spokeo event ever:

The Game of Thrones themed anniversary party. I rocked it in lip syncing and I was super excited to find another long-haired guy who looked just like me.

Words of advice:

The most underrated part of coding is talking about it. Talk to people about what you write, about what they write, about why one way is better. It’s important to process and think about what you do, and it’s important to have shared goals and shared styles on the team. People skills are a big part of programming!
